I recently upgraded from Office 2011 to Office 2016 for Mac. I can no longer type a simple numbered outline. I can see how to select a numbering style from the Format tab, but when I have typed the first main piece of text, I cannot find a way of moving to the next indented level, and then to further, more indented levels. I have read all sorts of documents purporting to give directions, including an official Microsoft one which refers to 'Paragraph' under the 'Home' tab (but there is no 'Paragraph' under the 'Home' tab). But surely, once I have selected a numbering style and have typed the first line, there must be a simple key-combination that will move the insertion point to the right and preface the next line with a new symbol, and so on?

The best approach for creating a document outline is to use Outline View which is specifically designed for the purpose of easily creating an outline - regardless of whether numbers are used. Word historically has offered some of the most extensive & effective outlining tools available:-) You can get to Outline View by using View> Outline or by clicking the Outline button on the View tab of the Ribbon.
